A Number-Cruncher’s Dilemma

I’m a numbers person.

As an undergraduate
I studied electrical engineering—using the laws God placed in the natural world to calculate and build.

In graduate school
I studied economics—using the patterns God wove into human society to model and measure.

Both disciplines are built on numbers more than words, so numbers feel like home to me.

This morning in Numbers 26:1-51, God commands Israel to take a census.

More precisely, He tells them to count—by ancestral families—those twenty years old and upward who are able to go to war.

“Take a census of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army of Israel”

Numbers 26:2 (NIV)

And I found myself asking:
Why now?

They’re on the plains of Moab.
King Balak is trying to curse them and could even strike first. Children and the elderly are in the camp.

The God who numbers the hairs on our heads already knows the exact population. So why command them to count 601,730 fighting men?

“The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.”

Numbers 26:51 (NIV)

Then Numbers 26:52-53 gives the reason:

“The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.”

Numbers 26:53 (NIV)

I couldn’t help but laugh with joy.
Land allocation is something you do after a war—and only if you’ve won.

Yet God orders them, right there on the enemy’s doorstep, to conduct a census for dividing the land.

It hit me:
With God,
the battle was already won.

Already decided.
Already secure.

And that realization filled my heart with gladness.

As I read Numbers 26, I kept smiling—because the Lord’s commands are not anxious guesses about the future; they are the steady steps of a God who already knows the outcome.

A World of Uncertainty

In human affairs, there is always uncertainty.

That’s why wireless communications in electrical engineering relies on probability and statistics.

That’s why economic models always include an error term and explain, in probabilistic terms, how far forecasts may land from reality.

War, especially, is loaded with uncertainty and countless variables—making outcomes hard to predict. We’ve seen in recent years (e.g., the war in Ukraine) how often expert projections miss the mark.

So much in this world is uncertain,
and our predictions often fail.

But when it comes to the things of God—yes, the things of God—there is no uncertainty.

When God speaks,
His word is fulfilled.

From Genesis to Revelation,
God faithfully shows, again and again,
that what He promises comes to pass.

And even today:
God who has promised to us
God who speaks to us.

Today’s Devotional and Prayer

Though my present situation feels precarious,
hanging by a thread,
yet I look to God’s Word.
I look to the faithful Word of God.

God who fulfills every word You have given me,
I entrust myself to Your faithfulness with all my heart right now.

Lord,
fulfill Your Word in the small span of my life.
Do in my life as You have spoken,
so that all may see the marvelous work of God.

I pray in the name of Jesus,
who fulfills all His words.
Amen.
